Anna University Chennai is offering under graduate and post graduate programs in many fields now like civil engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, science and humanities, technology and architecture and planning. It also has an MBA course in its curriculum. This university has four colleges under its anvil which are Madras Institute of technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Alagappa College of Technology and College of Engineering. After December 2001, it is going to have 225 independent engineering colleges, 6 government colleges and three government funded colleges under it in Tamil Nadu.
Situated in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. A third campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future.

Set up on 4th September 1978, the Anna University was actually formed by forging two famous technical colleges in the Madras city. It grants information related to the current educational needs, hence bringing together educational and industrial groups. The central campus of the university extends over a space of 100 hectares. The Madras institute of technology is another campus of the university that covers almost 20 hectares located at Chrompet. The university has a third campus also which extends for 80 hectares being located at the Instronic campus in Taramani, Adyar.This University is affiliated to the association of Indian Universities and UNESC. The UGC have also given recognition to this university by giving it a Five Star ranking in 2002 which is the biggest ranking. It was also getting this honor for five years for its superiority in imparting technical education.

Most importantly, the library also has a vast collection of services like Reprography, MALIBNET service, CD-ROM Databases, DELNET and internet browsing for the benefits of users.
